At Żibel, we deliver targeted conservation projects that drive measurable impact, from ghost net recovery to specialised clean-up missions.
Ghost Nets & Abandoned Fishing Gear
Recovering lost and abandoned fishing gear from Maltese waters. Fish, dolphins, turtles, and sharks become victims of ghost fishing. We're changing that.
Bin Map & Community Collection
10 Żibel bins placed around Malta and Gozo for community marine plastic collection. Operational 24/7, tracked and processed separately from standard waste.
Annual Microplastics Survey
A collaboration with MCAST and Aquabiotech Ltd to identify microplastic hotspots in Maltese waters and establish a standardised monitoring protocol.
Remote Coastline Access
Reaching the remote parts of Malta's coastline not accessible by land, where plastic accumulates unseen and unaddressed.
Marine Litter Interception
Operating Seabins in Maltese marinas in partnership with Strand Marine, continuously collecting floating plastic and generating data on harbour pollution composition.
Artificial Reefs
Artificial reefs made in Malta, our solution to ecosystem rehabilitation, restoring marine habitats and supporting biodiversity in Maltese waters.
Bio-based Plastics Research
EU Horizon 2020 project exploring bio-based plastic solutions as eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastics, from lab to commercial market.
Community Collection Network
Our citizen-led network of independent ocean plastic collectors using 10 Tribe bins across Malta and Gozo, supported by partner organisations.
Technical Diving Capacity
Expanding Żibel's Ghost Diving Team into deeper waters, certifying three divers in technical specialties to retrieve ghost nets at depths of up to 50 metres.
Fishing Gear Collection
A network of dedicated collection bins at 7 coastal fishing sites across Malta, making it easy for fishermen to dispose of end-of-life gear before it becomes a ghost net.
AI Marine Debris Platform
Malta's first AI-enabled marine debris reporting platform, a mobile and web app that turns every coastal visitor into a real-time pollution monitor.
Drone Debris Detection
Combining drones, multispectral cameras, and AI to map marine litter across Malta's coastline at unprecedented speed and scale.
INTERREG Italy-Malta
A cross-border research project developing high-resolution marine litter monitoring technology across the Sicily-Malta channel.

Our Process
Żibel was founded on a mission to clean and protect Malta's marine environment. We're a team of dedicated professionals, divers, and community organisers working together.
We survey coastlines, dive sites and fishing grounds to locate pollution hotspots and assess the scale of the problem.
We design targeted operations, from dive teams and kayak crews to community volunteer days, matched to each challenge.
We deploy teams, recover waste, and collect data. Every kilogram is weighed, sorted and logged for research and reporting.
We partner with authorities, NGOs and businesses to build lasting systems: bins, monitoring protocols, and education programmes.
Our team works closely with communities, businesses and government to understand their goals and deliver conservation solutions that create lasting, verifiable change.
Every clean-up generates verified data: weight collected, waste types, GPS locations, shared with ERA and European bodies.
We've mobilised 10,000+ volunteers since 2017. Real change comes from people, not just organisations.
Beyond clean-ups, we work on policy, research and product innovation to tackle plastic at its source.
