A network of dedicated collection bins at 7 coastal fishing sites across Malta and Gozo, making it easy for fishermen to dispose of end-of-life gear responsibly.
Project Qabda addresses a critical gap in Malta's marine waste infrastructure: the lack of accessible, dedicated disposal points for fishing gear at working harbours and coastal sites.
Abandoned fishing gear is one of the most harmful forms of marine pollution. By placing collection bins directly at fishing sites, Qabda removes the friction that leads to gear being discarded at sea or left to become ghost nets.
All collected gear is logged with the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture (DFA) and processed for recycling, contributing to Malta's circular economy targets. The project runs from September 2025 to August 2027.
