Seabin Malta

Marine litter interception in our harbours

In partnership with Strand Marine, we operate Seabins collecting floating plastic and analysing marine waste composition in Maltese marinas.

The Project

In partnership with Strand Marine, Żibel acts as the local operator for Seabin units in Maltese marinas. Seabins are submerged floating devices that continuously collect surface debris, microplastics, and oils from marina waters.

The research and analysis generated from collected waste gives us a clearer picture of the types and sources of marine plastic pollution reaching our coasts, feeding into policy discussions and targeted awareness campaigns.

Sustaining this network long-term requires ongoing institutional support. We continue to work with relevant authorities to ensure the programme's future.

How It Works

Seabin units pump water through a catch bag, trapping floating debris as small as 2mm including microplastics, while a separator removes hydrocarbons from the surface.

Data Output

Every collection is sorted and weighed by material type, building a longitudinal dataset on harbour pollution that informs national reporting to ERA and European bodies.
