Project Pontus

AI-powered marine debris reporting

A mobile and web platform that turns every diver, swimmer, and coastal visitor into a marine debris monitor, in real time.

About Project Pontus

Project Pontus is building Malta's first AI-enabled marine debris reporting platform. The system enables anyone on or near the water to instantly report pollution sightings, creating a live map of marine litter that drives faster and more targeted clean-up responses.

Built on Microsoft Azure and developed in partnership with WorqInc, the platform combines mobile reporting, AI classification, and a live operations dashboard, integrating citizen data directly into Żibel's field operations and national environmental monitoring.

The project runs from October 2025 to October 2027, with the platform expected to go live in early 2026.

Running: Oct 2025 to Oct 2027

AI Detection

Machine learning models trained on Maltese marine debris data identify and classify litter types from submitted photos and videos.

Mobile Reporting

A native mobile app allows divers, swimmers, and coastal users to report debris sightings directly from the water or shoreline with GPS tagging.

Web Dashboard

A real-time dashboard gives Żibel and partner organisations full visibility of active pollution hotspots for rapid response deployment.

Data Integration

All reports feed into a centralised database connected to ERA and national environmental monitoring systems for policy-level impact.
